"Wrong Way Corrigan"
In 1938, Corrigan crossed the Atlantic nonstop in his Curtis Robin. What made the feat especially unique is that he told authorities he'd be flying nonstop from Floyd Bennett Field in New York to California. However, Corrigan landed in Dublin, Ireland, 28 hours later.
Corrigan said it was an honest mistake and explained to media that he accidentally flew the reciprocal of the heading he'd intended. From then on, he became known as "Wrong Way Corrigan."
He became an overnight celebrity and a parades were arranged in his honor. Until his death, he maintained the whole flight was an honest mistake.
